Post a comment on this post telling me grammar things you want me to cover on Tuesday.
We're going to be doing a short lesson on grammar in class (before we workshop), and I want to make sure I cover things that you guys want help with. It can be anything you don't fully understand, or that you aren't sure if you're using right. If there's something you want help without you don't want to post it where everyone can see, send it to me in an email, and I'll post it.
Put down anything you don't understand/want to know more about; it doesn't matter if someone else has already beaten you to it. If a lot of people post about one particular thing, I'll know that I need to spend more time on it.
I don't know if this falls under the category of grammar, but sometimes parenthetical references can be a pain. I always question myself on when I put it at the end of the paragraph, sentence, or quote. Also, I never try to incorporate colons into my writing, so I don't even know when I could be using them.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty good with grammar except I'm not very good when it comes to quotations for some reason. I know that the punctuation mark is always inside of the quotations but I get confused when the quotation is mid-sentence with a question mark or an exclamation point. Another thing, in essays, my previous teacher taught us to never use words like "getting," or "making." I wanted to know why; she said they are lazy verbs and that they're not always grammatically correct. I also get confused with parenthetical references.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Nicole on the portion about quotations and knowing whether to put the question mark or exclamation point inside or outside the quotations if a question is being asked. I always like to think I am doing it the correct way, but then I second guess myself and feel it isn't right.
ReplyDeleteI'd really like you to go over when to use commas and when to just end the sentence. I feel like half my sentences are either run on because I use commas or not complete thoughts but I didn't use any commas. Another point I'd like you to cover is how to make a thesis statement stronger. Im not sure if a thesis statement is considered grammar but I know many people struggle with it.

ReplyDeleteFor me I need help with punctuation as well especially when it comes to research papers, i never get it right. Also commas i struggle with them and sometimes not always sure if i put them in the correct place. I always do use commas though and never add in colons because i get confused about where to place them.
ReplyDeleteI would really like to learn the difference in using "who" and "whom". I sometimes get those two confused with one another. As previous people posted I would also like to go over commas as well. Im a little iffy on that subject too.
ReplyDeleteI mainly need help with commas and run-on sentences, just like the others that commented before me. I sometimes add too many commas in my sentences. Other times I forget to put commas where they need to be. I want to improve this grammatical error that I currently have.
ReplyDeleteI also get confused sometimes when it comes to the placement of commas. I feel as though I sometimes put to many commas in one sentence and it turns into a run-on. Also, I agree with the others on going over quotation marks and where to put the punctuation mark if the quotation is in the middle of the sentence.
ReplyDeleteRun on sentences always give me problems.
