AT&T Commercial
Many commercials on television these days have very much in common with Bitzer's examples of the "Rhetorical Situation."Three common terms in each situation are the exigence, audience, and the constraints. Television is a great way to reach all sorts of audiences because such a broad range of people tune into television. In the past there have been very many commercials insisting that they have the right and best internet for you. The network business is a very competitive one because each of them is fighting to give you the best price as well as best quality. There are quite a few commercials about why AT&T is a better fit for the average person. The situation being brought to the audience's attention is how fast your network is. It is a good exigence because just about every person has a cell phone, internet, and/or cable. AT&T uses kids and some comical, cute jokes to get the idea, that their network is the fastest, out to the viewers. AT&T is not only a cellular phone service but it now provides cable as well as internet. Therefore the audience is very broad. It can address anyone needing a new cell phone service, internet service, or cable service. It gets the audiences attention by using the children to establish that "faster is better," therefore inferring that AT&T is the best service. Some constraints of this commercial would be those that have contracts with their other providers that they are unable to get out of. For example, T-Mobile could have someone on a 2-year contract. This could prohibit someone who is desiring a new service due to the pricing and/or quality from moving over to AT&T. I never really realized how much commercials catch my attention until one day I came across an eyeglasses one. I immediately believed I was in need of new glasses and insisted on going that week to get a pair. The AT&T commercial could hit it's viewers the same way the glasses commercial hit me, out of the blue. If one day your phone service is really poor and the next thing you see is a commercial of a different provider, it can make you consider switching services. The specific commercial I am addressing is short and sweet, therefore it keeps just about everyones attention. It is a good commercial to make people think about using AT&T as a provider.
