For my blog I chose one of the many mayhem commercials by Allstate. With this commercial I was able to identify the exigence, audience, and constraints. The exigence is an event that spurs the speaker to react. In this commercial the guy is pretending to be a teenage girl, texting. When this emotional teenager receives an upsetting text message, he swerves and hits another car. After damaging the car, it was very clear who the audience of this commercial is. The audience is who the commercial is intended for and in this case, it is for any car owners looking for better insurance that protects them from mayhem. This commercial also has many constraints, or the audiences' beliefs, attitudes, etc. One of the obvious constraints is that this commercial is reinforcing the stereotype that teenage girls are horrible drivers. I'm not disagreeing with this because I know it is very tempting for a teenage girl to text while they're driving but car insurance is very important to car owners. Choosing what you think the right car insurance is can be very difficult. In this commercial they only show you that they won't make you pay for something that isn't your fault but what about accidents that are your fault? This commercial isn't the most effective in informing you about their car insurance but it definitely grabs your attention. After viewing this commercial, the quote, "Allstate, you can save money and be better protected from mayhem like me" will probably be stuck in your head so its up to you from there to do further research about their car insurance.
I agree that the Allstate commercial shows you what they will not pay for if it isn't your fault but what about if the accident is your fault? I do think it's partially effective but like you said, it's up to you to do further research on the insurance company if you're going to choose this company to cover car payments. I like your analysis and I was almost going to do this one, haha!
