In case you hadn't heard...the Pope resigned!

On today's news it was announced that the Pope has decided to resign. In the Catholic faith this is a big deal. While I am not Catholic and I cannot really relate to the significance behind this, I don't agree with the harassment that the Pope has received by the public. Typically, the Pope reigns until his death and then the College of Cardinals elects the next Pope. However, since the Pope has resigned instead of dying, he now has a role in choosing his successor. Personally, I find it respectable that the Pope was able to recognize that his old age was preventing him from being able to perform his job to the best of his ability. While it does throw a few kinks in the usual tradition, the Pope is trying to keep the well being of the Catholic church in mind. I respect the Pope and believe that the public should allow him to resign quietly.

  1. I agree with you Jenna!! I was actually going to write my blog post about this...haha but since I'm Catholic, it is a big decision in our faith and in the church. It will be different to see how the whole process goes through as Pope Benedict has a role now in choosing his successor rather than the Cardinals voting. It will definitely be a historical mark in my lifetime and wish people could respect his decision to resign.
